NO. That won't protect you from getting it, the cream will wear off. The cold sore creams are meant to help heal oral herpes break outs.
Just don't have intercourse or give your partner oral sex while he has a break out and your partner should use condoms in between break outs. You may also want to talk to your partner about antiviral medication, if he takes it regularly then your partner can drastically reduce their chances of passing herpes onto you.
