No, there is really no way of preventing transmission of HSV-1 to your spouse. Actually, there is a good chance he might already have it and not have any symptoms. The percentage of people who have HSV-1 is very high..something like 80% I believe I've read. But like HSV-2, most people do not have symptoms. You can take a daily anti-viral, such as Acyclovir or Valtrex, that can drastically reduce the chance of transmission by as much as 50%. I would consider that, if you do not take one already. It is possible to transmit it to him during oral sex. HSV-1 can be transitted to the genitals. Other than taking an anti-viral, the only other way to cut down on the chances of transmission this way is to use a condom.
Hope this helps!Yes, it is completely preventable. Do not kiss or give oral sex to your spouse when you have an outbreak, and wash your hands frequently. Don't share drinks or chapstick, etc. HSV-1 is completely manageable and not nearly as contagious as HSV-2.
HSV-1 is ONLY contagious DURING an outbreak, when you have an actual sore. It is contagious starting when you first feel the tingle until it is all the way gone. Usually, HSV-1 is limited to cold sores around your mouth, although you can get them ANYWHERE, and it is easily transmitted by mouth or fingertips. So wash your hands very frequently!! Again, no sharing things that your mouth touches when you have an outbreak. You can have unprotected sex in-between outbreaks and your spouse WILL NOT contract the virus.
There are pills and topical creams that really help to speed up the healing time of outbreaks, too (links to websites below), and they're very affordable.
Just be smart!
