It's possible for herpes to lay dormant for years or even a lifetime. One partner having herpes does not mean the other cheated. At a particular time the virus may become active due to stress, tiredness, weakened immune system etc.

Unless the viral culture was taken between 24-48 hours after you exhibited a sore, then you will not get a valid result. In that case, you should also have an IgG blood test for type-specific herpes (be SURE you get the IgG--NOT the IgM which is unreliable). The IgG will tell you which TYPE you have contracted--HSV-1 (oral herpes contracted genitally) or HSV-2 (genital herpes). The downside to the test is that you may not have antibodies in the blood for herpes for 2 weeks-4 months after you are infected, so an initial negative result too early in the game can call for a re-test later on. In most people, 3 months is the turning point.

If your husband has a history of cold sores/fever blisters, then it is altogether possible you have become infected with oral herpes through genital contact. Since over 80% of the people in the US test positive for HSV-1, it is likely that one or the other of you is infected and may be a silent carrier.

Here's the good news in a bad scenario. IF you discover you have HSV-1 genitally, and your husband tests positive for HSV-1 as well, you don't have to worry about infecting him. He's already got it.

Just FYI--there is a recent story of a widow of over 20 years who suddenly had an outbreak. She'd had no sexual activity since her husband died. Obviously, herpes can remain dormant (asymptomatic) for a loonnng time!

In fact, it is entirely possible that your husband may be an asymptomatic carrier of herpes--many men are. If you come back positive, he may want to have the test as well.Herpes can lie dormant for long periods of time but this doesn't commonly happen, it usually takes from 1-3 weeks to have symptoms and an out break.
You could have contracted it from your husband if he ever contracted cold sores. You may want to ask your hubby if he has hever had cold sores before. Some people only get out breaks during child hood then don't have another for long periods of time. Or they don't get an out break again but carry the virus in their bodies. Cold sores are caused by oral herpes and there is a small chance of passing them even if there were no out breaks. They can be passed from your partners mouth to your genitals during oral sex. But it's more likely to be passed while there is any signs of an out break.
Try to remain calm and distract your self until you get the results. At least they tested you an didn't rely on just a visual exam as herpes can look differently from person to person that gets infected with it. I'm surprised they didn't give you any thing to treat it with.
The products on the internet that claim to cure herpes are usually scams, there is nothing that will cure it but it will suppress the out breaks. If it sounds too good to be true then it most likely is. I stay as far away from those as I can. Try using Lysine, it's a natural antiviral that can be used to help treat out breaks. But if your taking other medications you may want to consult with your doctor or pharmacists before taking it.
