Make sure they tested for type one and type two. Just as many are type 2 orally as are type one. Location isn't really relevant. It is possible that the oil has affected the test results.

IF you took an IgM test, they are notoriously unreliable. For some reason, doctor's office STILL use it! It tests for both, but is famous for giving both false negative and false positive tests.

IF you go to a clinic, ask for the IgG type-specific herpes test. Most labs do use that one--but be sure you ask for--and get that one. It is much more reliable. (Note that people may not present antibodies showing they are infected for 2 weeks-4 months after exposure to the virus, which can result in a false negative test result. Since you have had cold sores for years, you WILL have the antibodies in your blood, so timing isn't important for you to get tested with the IgG.)

If you had cold sores in the past, antibodies remain in the system and will be detectable by the appropriate test.

The source below can tell you about the testing process.
