Does a Genital Herpes test detect Oral Herpes?
Only if you have someones genitals in your mouth...Herpes 1 is usually the oral herpes = cold sores, fever blister, etc. ( Not serious, goes away)
Herpes 2 is the STD herpes.
Once you have either, they are like any other virus and lye dormant in the persons body. Good thing is, EVERYONE has Herpes Simplex 1. (Oral Herpes) or has had it.
SO of course the testing for them is different. You dont really get te4sted for a cold sore.The IgG TYPE-SPECIFIC herpes blood test detects the TYPE of antibodies you have for BOTH HSV-1 (oral herpes) and HSV-2 (genital herpes). It does not tell you WHERE the infection is (oral herpes can affect the genitals--not just "cold sores" of the mouth), but will tell you whether you are infected.
A viral culture of sores taken within 24-48 hours of an outbreak also can tell whether you have HSV-1 (oral herpes) or HSV-2 (genital herpes) of the genitals.
