How long does it take to get test results back for herpes?
If you are not exhibiting an outbreak of herpes (which can be diagnosed in some instances via a viral culture, or swab of the sores), you ask your doctor or the clinic for the herpes test. Specifically, an IgG "type-specific" herpes blood test, which will diagnose which "type" of herpes you may have--HSV-1 (oral herpes/cold sores), or HSV-2 (genital herpes). Be aware that the HSV-1 (cold sore) can actually be present in the genitals via oral sex--and not on the typical site, which is the lips.
Depending on the doctor/clinic/lab, it can take from 2-10 days to get your results back. You might want to check out the Herpes Handbook for an explanation of the different tests that can be run for herpes.Usually it takes about a week or two to get your results back. As for procedures, that depends on if you're having a break out or not. Some times no news is good news but if the doctors office doesn't get back to you with in 2 weeks then don't be afraid to call them up and ask for your results.
If you're having a break out then you can have a swab culture of the out break done which can be more accurate then the blood test. But if you don't have an out break and waited at least a month after being exposed to get tested then you can have a blood test done now then have another test done in 2-4 months just to be sure.
