Just diagnosed w/ herpes - -Cannot afford meds?
there is a medication called Acyclovir which is an older but generic medication. The downside of this medicine is you have to take it five times a day, but it is very effective. It may be on the generica Walgreens or Target $ 4 list. Good luck. The acyclovir is just as effective as Valtrex for most people. You don't need to take it five times a day unless you have an active outbreak.
My experience is one, two hundred mg tablet, per day will do nicely as a preventative. In fact, you don't even need to do that unless you have constant outbreaks. If I feel the distinctive "tingle" of an outbreak coming on, I start taking two acyclovir tablets immediately, and then one four or five times a day for three or four days. That's what works best for me. Your dosage needs may be slightly different, but I doubt it. Acyclovir is a molecule that simply "plugs" into the virus wall and prevents it from reproducing itself. This stops the outbreak dead in its tracks. It's not really a drug you can abuse, because it has no other effects.
This is a minor, manageable virus. Someday there will be a cure. But for now the acyclovir is your best bet. My personal experience is the acyclovir works better for me than Valtrex. There is no way to tell how often you will need it. Every one with herpes is different and has different experiences with out breaks. Some people have out breaks more frequently then others, there is no way to tell if this will happen to you.
But it's good to have some kind of medication on hand to take if you feel an out break coming on. I'm in Canada and the last time I bought Valtrex with out insurance it was about 70$ (including taxes) for 7 pills. You really should look into getting that insurance card, there should be a way for you to get one.
There are more natural products out there that can help. Lysine is a natural antiviral, it can help suppress herpes and it's cheaper then Valtrex. You can find it at health food stores or your pharmacy might have it in with the herbal remedies. You should also do what you can to keep your immune system strong, exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet and try to fit some time in to relax.
