Herpes Simplex 2 Transmission: Will You Ever Feel Comfortable Again?
Article by Jerry Pickett
If you have acquired herpes simplex 2 or are dating someone who has, there tends to be a significant amount of stress around the possibilities of herpes simplex 2 transmission during sexual activity. Many even feel as if their sex lives are over, often before they've ever really hit their prime.
The good news is that - while nothing is 100% - there are a combination of things you can do to significantly reduce the risk of herpes simplex 2 transmission. Understanding what these are and taking action not only reduces the risk, in fact, but more importantly creates a bond of trust between you and your partner. This is key to moving past the infection.
Here are a few important points about limiting the chance of herpes simplex 2 transmission:
*A daily dose of antiviral medication. The drug valaciclovir is currently on the market (under the trade name Valtrex) to limit the shedding of herpes simplex 2. A recent study of nearly 1500 couples concluded that only 0.5% of those infected with herpes simplex 2 passed on the infection to a partner while taking 500 mg daily of valaciclovir. Those taking a placebo, however, passed it on a significantly greater 2.2% of the time.
*Strict condom use. This means using a quality, strong latex condom at all times. It also means being diligent in not allowing bodily fluid exchange during removal.
*Avoiding activity during outbreaks. This includes oral sex and penetration, but does not necessarily mean all activity. Mutual masturbation or other more creative sex acts can still be performed - again making sure that bodily fluids are not exchanged.
The important point in all of this is not to see herpes simplex 2 transmission as the end of your sex life. It simply requires an adjustment as with any challenge.
If you are currently single but seeking a partner, there is also the 'comfort zone' alternative of seeking out others in the same situation, via online dating. Websites such as PositiveSingles.com allow you to find others in the same situation who completely understand what you're going through. One of the many great things about the internet is how it has made hsv 2 dating relatively anxiety-free.
At any rate, avoid indulging in shame and depression - they have never proven to do any good.
