Herpes question: How much to take meds?
Herpes question: How much to take meds?
Both answers are correct, actually. Most of the time antiviral medications are taken when an outbreak occurs, but they can be taken as suppressive therapy in case of a weak immune system or chronic/recurrent symptoms. There is no correct answer. She can take it to suppress herpes but it's harder to get off it if taken daily and she will have outbreaks when she quits.
Episodically is when you take it for an outbreak.
I personally, don't believe in taking anything daily and have had herpes for 25+ years. It lessens on it's own.She can do both. But if she is in a serious or sexual relationship she will need to take it regularaly. If she isn't then she can take it when she has an out break. So both are techincally ok to do.
I only take Valtrex when I get an out break I have learned that long term use can cause some damage to either your kidneys or liver. She may want to check with the doctor if her meds could cause some damage with long term regular use.
