You can boost your immune system, when your immune system is strong that can help prevent out breaks. Also you can take antiviral medication or suppressants, taking these regularly can also help prevent break outs and they can make you less likely to pass herpes onto your partner. Also get to know your symptoms, if you ever do get a break out tell your partner so you can abstain from any sexual activity until it's completely over. You're not likely to pass herpes by just touching each others genitals in between break outs. As for HSV1 don't kiss or have oral sex while you have any signs of a cold sore.
