Can't help you with an exact percentage but you shed viral particles before you get an outbreak. Protected sex (i.e., condoms) is probably your best bet.Dear concerned:
The chances are 50/50. They either get infected, or not.
Why? Because even if you are not breaking out, the virus is still shedding. Decide for yourself.
You and your partner should both get tested before having sex. Herpes is not the worst STD or disease in the world. There are worst things in life. Like drunk drivers.
Join a support group or talk to a counselor may help you ease your worries. It's how you see and feel about self that is important, dealing with it is just normal life activity. Sh1t happens.

The only antiviral "proven" to reduce viral shedding is Valtrex. Studies claim that it can reduce the already small chance of transmission without symptoms from approximately 4% to just over 2%. However, I believe it is only intended to be relied upon in this way when the drug is taken everyday as a suppressive.
If you are looking for a natural alternative, clinical studies have found that the herb Olive Leaf may also help to inhibit the herpes virus from shedding. It is safe for most adults to take and may also offer your partner some resistance from contracting the virus if they take it regularly as well. For a powerful combo, combine the Olive Leaf with Andrographis and Echinacea.
Just a tip, if you are taking a Lysine supplement (which can also help reduce herpes activity) take the Olive Leaf separately at least 3 hours apart to prevent the two interfering. This will help give best results.
