Can you have Herpes Zoster if you have never had varicella?
Herpes Zoster is a type 1 herpes virus...caused by a virus in your body.
You can have Zoster without having chickenpox, but it is very uncommon. This is because almost all varicella infections result in chickenpox. But in order to get zoster, the virus must be in your body, and the only way that happens is to be infected.
From a personal note, both of my kids had chickenpox, but I didn't catch it from them. I asked my mom whether I ever had chickenpox, and she said no. So I might be one of those uncommon individuals who may have had an asymptomatic infection when I was young, and this gave me immunity.
