Will herpes show up in a normal blood test that isn't looking for it?

no

You need to ask for a blood test specifically for stds & make sure you let them know you think you might have herpes to. Sometimes they don't include the herpes test with the std blood tests.Nope, you need to ask for the blood test for herpes. And sometimes it doesnt even show up on that. In some cases the test is no accurate, talk to your doctor they will inform you more. Sometimes you have to get tested a couple times before it shows up. Thats what happened to me.No.

In most cases, if you wish to be tested for HSV you need to request the Herpes blood test specifically. The "standard panel" of STD tests (such as the one performed by organizations such as Kaiser Permanente) does not include the HSV blood test.

If you wish to be tested for Herpes, you should be aware that some blood tests are better than others. The older "crude antigen" tests did not do a good job of discriminating between the HSV-1 virus (which usually expresses as oral herpes, or cold sores), and HSV-2 (which usually expresses as genital herpes). However, the newer type-specific serologic tests (TSSTs) are very specific and reliable. Be sure to explicitly request the newer test, as not all doctors are well-informed on this subject.

Here is a link to a company that will perform the IgG type-specific test for you, anonymously and affordably:

If you want to be better informed about Herpes, I can recommend this book:
