Unfortunately, you can be infective in the prodrome period, before the blisters appear. You might look into suppressive therapy. The good news is that many people grow out of Type ! as they get older (it becomes more dormant). You can also pass this genitally, so be careful. Do some online research--there is loads out there.72% of the adult population we surveyed had HSV-1 infection. Most people are infected around the mouth, not in the genital area. There is asymptomatic shedding and other people can and often are infected that way. But it's such a common virus to have that few people actually worry about it.As a retired nurse epidemiologist, I agree with Diane that people who have HSV I in and around their mouth, you start to shed viral cells before you even get the first inkling of a sign or symptom of tingling, burning, red bump. You can even be in the prodrome state (as I explained above) on the inside of your mouth. The same goes for HSV II in the genital area inside and out. In my 30 yr nursing epidemiologist career I have had 2 females die on their initial exposure as it is the worst and can spread on the inside of the body. Both females were married with loose rs for husbands.
