If someone has herpes on their lips does that mean they also have it on their genitals?

No, even though it is the same virus it does not mean they have genital herpes. I get cold sores once in a while, but I am virgin and never did anything sexual.

Yeah guys, I am far behind. No probably not, but it is possible of course. I totally understand the not understanding herpes thing! I was just diagnosed a few months ago and have been doing so much research and still I have so many unanswered questions.
They have some good advice on the cdc.gov website though. They also have a number on there where you can call and get info. Good luck and sorry! No. Herpes does not wander around your body. It lives in specific nerve endings - not in your blood or your whole body. If you get it on your mouth, then you have it orally - not genitally. You would need to catch it again on your genitals to have genital herpes.

I think that some terminology might be helpful for you.

HSV1 (Herpes Simplex Virus 1) is the strain of herpes that usually infects the mouth, but can sometimes infect the genitals.

HSV2 is the strain that "prefers" the genitals, but can infect the mouth.

If you get either strain on your mouth, then you have "oral herpes." If you get either strain on your gentials, then you have "genital herpes."

Most people (50% to 80%) have oral herpes. It's usually caught in childhood from kissing relatives, and it is NOT an STD.

The best place I know to learn more about herpes, is the website below. Good luck.
