If im in a commited relationship and contracted type 1 herpes and he gets cold sores why did he test negative?

Did you go with him and see the test results or did he just tell you he went and you took his word. taggerThis IS confusing. There are two possibilities that I can imagine.
First, you may have had genital herpes before you started dating him. Some people have genital herpes for a long time with no symptoms, so if you didn't have a clear cut "initial outbreak" with flu-like symptoms, then perhaps you have actually had genital herpes for years, and just had outbreaks that were so mild that they went unnoticed.
Second, the blood test could have gotten a bit messed up. He might consider getting retested, or having a swab test done the next time he has a cold sore. The swab test will give a reliable positive result, but sometimes gives false negatives if the sore is just healing up.
I'm sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis. Are you 100% confident that your diagnosis is correct? I've heard of misdiagnosis of herpes before - mostly through "visual" diagnosis. If your doctor didn't perform a test on you to confirm your herpes, you might want to have that done - just in case you actually have something else.
Good luck. The blood tests are NOT 100% accurate. It is quite common for people who have obvious herpes symptoms - such as cold sores - to test negative. There is about a 15% margin of error on the blood test.
Obviously, if he gets cold sores and has infected you, he is NOT in the clear. He has oral hsv-1.
He could have a swab test next time he has a cold sore on his mouth - the swab test is much more accurate.
