What does this herpes blood test result mean?
Being a retired nurse I can explain the info in your question.
HSV 1 (herpes simplex) 1 is around and in the mouth and lips.
HSV 2 (herpes simplex) 2 is in the genital area
Explaining the results above: HSV1 IgG positive means the viral infection is present right now. HSV2 IgG gives the level of infection.
The last test HSV IgM is negative which means there are no antibodies or memory cells of having the viral infection in the genital area. IgG means immunoglobulin active infection. IgM means immunoglobulin is dormant right now but was at one time infected.
Here comes the disclaimer: people who have cold sores have herpes simplex 1. If two people have a lot of foreplay or have oral, vaginal, penis and anal sex it can spread to those areas. If someone has herpes simplex 2 again it can spread up to the mouth and lips through oral sex. Bottom line is: people can have both kinds of herpes on any part inside or outside of their body and can spread it around to their sex partners. The HSV-1 I learned that if it is over 3.5, then the virus is present-- anything less, should be retested or considered wrong. He does not have HSV-2. It's negative. The HSV-1 is nothing to be concerned about--that type of herpes viral infection likes to live around the mouth area (cold sores). I would say that he should get retested though--the results seem unclear.
