While it is not possible this time, it is important to have medicine on hand. To be effective, the drugs to treat recurrent episodes (epsiodic therapy) need to be started as early as possible during the development of the recurrent lesion -- preferably less than 6 hours (famciclovir) to 12 hours (valacyclovir) after the first symptoms appear. Ask your physician about this so that you will have meds to begin immediately for the next episode, should you experience one.
-recommended treatment (episodic therapy):
*valacyclovir 500mg 2x/day OR 1g/day for 3 days
or
*famciclovir 125 mg 2x/day for 5 days
or
*acyclovir 200 mg 5x/day for 5 days OR 800mg 3x/day for 2 days (appears as efficacious as the 5 day regimen)
It is too early to tell how the course of your disease will pan out. Some people have a few outbreaks a year or less. Others have more. If you have less than 6 episodes a year epsiodic therapy is recommended. If you have 6 or more, suppressive (daily) therapy is indicated. However, even if you have less than 6 outbreaks a year a doctor can still prescribe suppressive daily therapy

*Acyclovir 200mg 3x/day OR 400mg 2x/day
