There is no cure for herpes at present but studies are being de to find cure because ore and more people are getting infected with the virus and there seems to be no brakes on it. As of now physicians and scientists are prescribing medicines only for reducing the symptoms of herpes and to heal them faster but there is no certainty that the symptoms will not recur. There are oral as well as topical medicines that ca help ease the symptoms of herpes. There are products in the market that claims to heal the sores effectively but it is best if the infected person uses the herpes medication prescribed by the doctor. We will look at the in detail.

Antiviral medications stop the growth and development of herpes. Antiviral medicines are usually taken orally. Famciclovir or Famvir is used to treat outbreaks and help prevent future outbreaks both in the case of oral herpes as well as genital herpes. Valacyclovir or Valtrex is used to treat cold sores and shingles. It can also be used to control genital herpes outbreaks in all patients, including those with HIV. Acyclovir or Zovirax is used to treat outbreaks of herpes simplex on the skin (mouth, lips, and genitals), outbreaks of shingles, and chickenpox. It may also be used to help prevent outbreaks of herpes in patients with frequent outbreaks. Some of these antiviral medicines also come in creams ad gels and can be applied on the affected areas. Topical medicines are also available for herpes and some are docosanol, tromantadine, zilactin, etc. Docosaol prevents the entry of the virus into the skin and is the most accepted topical treatment for herpes. This medicine that comes in the form of a cream is approved by the FDA. Tromantadine also bars the entry and spread of the virus and zilactin prevents the sores from increasing in size and decrease viral spreading. Other drugs such as cimetidine, probenecid, aspirin, etc are proven to help in reducing the symptoms like pain, extent and severity, frequency, etc even though they are meant for other diseases. A vaccine called zostavax has been recently developed and has shown to reduce the incidence of zoster herpes. Studies are still on. Certain dietary adjustment and changes and taking dietary supplements are also believed to be beneficial. There are many natural compounds that have been found to benefit those infected with herpes, for example; garlic, aloe vera, lemon, carrageenans (extracts from red seaweed), extracts of echinacea, resveratrol, etc.
