Herpes is contagious when you have an outbreak so you should always use a condom to prevent the spread of this disease. When you have an active outbreak the best medicine is generally Valtrex which is a prescription medication. Since you have so many questions I get the impression that your doctor did not give you much information about herpes when they diagnosed you. Go out on the web and read all the info you can find so that you are properly informed. Valtrex merely shortens the length of the outbreak. There is no cure for herpes and you will continue to have outbreaks but how often is not predictable.
