I'd suggest that you also join the Forum (it's anonymous--just sign up, no spam from there!)--because this subject gets a LOT of attention there, too. You'll see lots of experiences--and insight from many of the people who have been there, done that.
Don't worry, it's not spam. And it's an excellent site to find out what you need to know about the subject.

Disregard Rae's answer. The ONLY STD covered under the law (and then only in some states) is your HIV/AIDS status if you are positive for the virus.
No other STDs are legally required to be disclosed to a partner.
NOT to do so, however, is sexually irresponsible.From what I understand it is a law that you must tell a new sexual partner if you have any STDs, because if you have unprotected sex or even oral sex with someone and give them an STD knowing you have one...then you can get in legal trouble.
PLUS it is the RIGHT thing to do....Think of it if you were in their shoes..if you didn't have the STD and you met an amazing guy/girl and they had say HIV, slept with you and never told you...and BOOM you get it...how would you feel?
Mature, honest, adult...you are right explain in a comfortable setting, don't make them feel pressured...just tell them all the information you know about the condition of HERPES so they are educated...and if that person loves you or cares enought to wanna date or be with you it won't matter to them. They will be happy they knew up front.
