Herpes Simplex and Pregnancy - What You Should Know about Herpes Simplex During Pregnancy

Herpes Simplex has two distinct forms - Simplex 1 which is oral herpes found on the face and Simplex 2 found on the genitals. Millions of people have contracted one form or the other of herpes. Some of them don't realize they have it while others are very aware of it due to the sores and itching it causes. For pregnant women there are concerns about herpes and the unborn child. Most prenatal care programs involve testing for STD's including Herpes Simplex.
The situation of having herpes is never pleasant, but it is much more complicated when the woman is pregnant. There can be plenty of complications for both the mother and the unborn child due to the Herpes Simplex virus. In rare cases in can result in death but in most cases the newborn is born with a very extreme rash. If it isn't treated immediately it could rupture and all fluids to drain. This is very painful for the infant and precautions are taken to prevent it from happening.
Many newborns end up with the skin condition Eczema Herpeticum which is a skin problem. It can cause scabs to form all over the body. They are extremely tender, itchy, and painful. The child may also develop cycles of fever and chills as the immune system is weakened by the onset of the Herpes Simplex virus. If the infant's immune system is extremely weak the baby could die.
This type of virus is very harsh on the skin of an infant. They can go blind if the virus causes their eyelids or corneas to swell. This results in the eye rupturing and then eventually blindness occurring. A more serious concern is that the Herpes Simplex virus has affected vital organs such as the heart or lungs. In 80% of infants who die from herpes this is the cause. There can be brain damage that occurs as well.
The fact that a pregnant woman has herpes doesn't necessarily mean her baby will have them. Studies show that 7.7% of infants from a vaginal delivery and 1.1% of infants from a caesarean are affected by the Herpes Simplex virus.
