HPV stands for Human Papilloma Virus. It is one of the most commonly transmitted STIs. There are over 40 types of HPV, and most people who have it have no idea, because in many cases, there are no signs.

Different strains of HPV can cause genital warts, cervical cancer, other cancers such as vulvar, penile, anal, and vaginal; and other such health problems. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer developed from it, the other types are much more rare.

The strains are classified into two groups: low risk (the kind that cause warts) and high risk (the kind that can cause cancer).

How long she will live and how this will affect her life really depends on what strain of it she has. If she only has a wart causing strain, then it isn't very life threatening. However, if she has a cancer causing strain, she'll have to be extremely vigilant about getting anual tests and screenings done to detect abnormal cell changes.

If she is a healthy individual with a strong immune system, it is possible her body can clear the virus from her system on its own, as there is no cure. She can also talk to her doctor about getting the Gardasil vaccine, which can help protect her against other strains of the virus that she doesn't already have. Of course, she will definitly want to practice safe sex using condoms, and tell her partners that she does have the disease. Also, make sure she knows that she NEEDS to have her pap smear done at least yearly, as that is gonna be the only way to check for abnormal cell development in her cervix.

It is definitly a shock to be diagnosed with an STI, but it doesn't have to be the end of the world. It is so very common, so she is not alone. There are support groups available, if she needs or wants help from others who know what she is going through. And you are awesome, being such a great friend through all of this. Warts showed up about 4 months later which were removed with a combination of freezing off with liquid nitrogen and applying aldara cream. They were gone in less than a week and haven't returned. I've read that 60% of males between 18-55 have the virus. Another study says 50% of all sexually active people have the virus. It is the most common STD and isn't really that big of a deal, relatively speaking, IMO. There isn't a cure yet, but the immune system can, over time, lessen or eliminate the risk of it being spread to another partner. No timetable for this, could be months or never. There are some concerns with it being linked to cervical cancer in women.

Corrections more than welcome.all women who have had sex have the virus unless they only had sex with a vergin. this virus has many varieties and some cause cervical cancer but many times this virus goes away. millions of women have this and if you have it, you eat and live healthy and pray it goes away and does not cause cervical cell changes. you get a regular pap and use a condom or obstain from sex. do not be afraid because once you have it there is nothing you can do but hope it goes away and protect others from getting it. men pass it and women risk getting it when they have unprotected sex.
always use a condom because the risk of warts and herpes and Hepatitis are great these days. be smart.
