Is it possible to pass Genital Herpes virus through breastfeeding?
Is it possible to pass Genital Herpes virus through breastfeeding?
It is perfectly fine for a mother with genital herpes to breastfeed her newborn child. The herpes virus is not present in breast milk. It is possible for a person to get herpes sores on their breasts and nipples though. If this happens, the women should NOT breast feed her child because herpes can be spread by direct skin to skin contact.
Genital herpes is usually only spread by sex (vaginal, anal and oral) and direct skin to skin contact with the area. If a person were to have cold sores (herpes simplex virus 1) they can spread it through kissing and saliva. In fact, kissing is the most common way of getting cold sores. Also, if a person with cold sores gives another person oral sex, it is possible for that person to get genital herpes from that. Herpes simplex virus 1 is typically cold sores, while herpes simplex virus 2 is typically genital herpes. I say "typically" because both herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 can cause both cold sores and genital herpes.
